Hello Everybody! I know some of you are worried about honey and cinnamon drink possible side effects. Well, for those of you, who are interested, and for everyone who’s been asking these particular questions for some time now – here are my answers:
Coumarin is a chemical compound contained in Cassia (Cinnamomum aromaticum – aka Chinese Cinnamon) and is known to cause liver and kidney damage in high concentrations. True Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum – aka Ceylon Cinnamon) has negligible amounts of Coumarin, so no worries here folks as long as you use the True Cinnamon.
Coumarin toxicity is 275 mg/kg, which is relatively low compared to related chemical compounds. People are able to largely metabolize Coumarin to a compound that is of lower toxicity.
One teaspoon of Cassia Cinnamon powder contains 5.8 to 12.1 mg of coumarin, which may be above the tolerable daily intake value for smaller individuals. However, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BFR) only cautions against high daily intake of foods containing coumarin.
Its report specifically states that Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) contains “hardly any” coumarin.
Also pay attention to the key phrase here “high concentrations” – half teaspoon of cinnamon a day is not high concentration. So if you’ve been using a half teaspoon of Cassia to prepare the drink, instead of the Ceylon Cinnamon, you don’t have to be worried, just try to find true cinnamon.
Important notice: You should not overuse it, meaning you can’t use it forever.
If you reach your weight goal within a couple of weeks or a month – that would be fantastic. If you need more time, just use it for about 2 to 4 months tops.
I know that in my original honey and cinnamon post I recommend to make a paste from the honey and the cinnamon powder and then poor the hot water in the cup. However, I should agree that it’s better for the honey to be added after the water and cinnamon mix cools (let’s say about half an hour). I first made this drink; last PM – had a 1/2 cup before going to bed -woke up with burning tingling in wrist and ankles – blood pressure was really high (I take meds for that) could this be a reaction to the honey/cinnamon drink?
I have used honey and cinnamon since last august with 34 pound weight loss. I still need to loose another 100 pounds. Do you have any suggestions?
Paul, try to have a balanced diet and eat at least 5 types of fruit per day as well as getting a lot of vegetable servings, eat high protein but “good carbs” are okay to have and beneficial, also stay away from soy and tofu.

If you guys want to lose weight, try diet and exercise…I hear it works.
Wow Kimberely, I suppose your a stick figure that has no problems with weight. Some of us do and Diet and Exercise doesn’t always do it. For some of us it’s a uphill battle even with diet and exercise.
Don’t criticize, unless you’ve actually been there.
Tried the Cinnamon and Honey last night and this morning. Here’s hoping with the stairmaster combined I can get rid of 50 lbs!
no, not a stick figure at all. i have to work really hard to maintain and it works for me. i also have a very good diet and want it bad enough to make it happen.
As an entertainer that eats terrible food and exercises only on stage I have found that 6 small meals each day, never eat past 7pm and daily walks really help to keep the weight down. Cinn and honey is a great for all kinds of health issues infact the medical industry is even using it to treat people with certain cancers and skin problems. Thank you Mr. Honey Bee.
Wow Kimberley, how awesome for you, thanks for sharing. Guess we can all learn from your wealth of experience and knowledge. You go girl, thanks again!! maybe you should set up an advice column. Yeah thats the ticket!!

I have been drinking ceylon cinnimon and raw honey for almost a week. I have noticed my face is not looking so clear. Alittle bumpy. then yesterday,I was feeling so happy and energetic and in a natural high mood. What’s happening?
Hello @Starr,
Sorry for my so-o-o late reply…
How are you feeling now? Is your face OK?
I assume the “bumpy face” reaction must have been some sort of detoxification. And the happy and energetic state of your mood is due to the overall energizing properties of the honey and cinnamon drink 😉
I am a hypothyroid patient for the last 7 years and on regular meditation. I am taking 112.5mcg thyronorm early in the morning and doing morning walk for 40 min daily except sunday. I am overweight. I have started this cinnamon and honey drink yesterday only. Is it harmful in hypothyroid. PLZ help
Sorry For silly question, but, I know you drink it warm in the morning, but the other half in the evening, is it taken cold?
Lucy,
Your question is not silly. “The other half” of the drink must be refrigerated until next intake. Keep it at room temperature for 15 minutes before intake 😉
!!! DO NOT Microwave !!!
Hello tanu,
I’m sorry I can’t help you more, but in my personal opinion you should consult your personal licensed health-care professional before continue taking the cinnamon and honey drink. As I am not a doctor, I can’t provide you with medical advice whether it is harmful or not to hypothyroid patients.
I hope everything is well with you!
I too am eating raw honey
I get my am dose on a healthy wheat bread toast.
Mix about 1/2 tsp both honey and Simply Jif peanut butter (its sig. Lower in sodium n sugars)
Then sprinkle to my liking a bit of cinnamon powder.
Stir to paste n put on my toast, on a banana, crackers…
It’s my go to treat!! So delish a.m. I’m not a big b’fast eater but feel this gives a pretty light healthy one
I’ve heard of a mix of cinnamon, honey and apple cider vinegar. Has anyone??
I’m not sure of the ingredients. Would really like to know
Hi Sarah,
I’ve heard about honey and apple cider vinegar mix. I wrote a post about it, you can check it here: apple cider vinegar drink for weight loss
As for a cinnamon to that mix – hmm, I don’t know, but I will look into it 😉
hai now i started to drink honey and Cinnamon how many days it will take for result and also it cause any side affect plz reply.
Hello satya,
Keep up this way and you will see results in the next couple of weeks. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results too soon! Remember Honey and Cinnamon drink works subtle and slower than conventional diets. Be patient and the results will surprise you.
For possible side effects read the post, under which you’ve commented: Honey and cinnamon drink possible side effects
But no there are no side effects, as long as you don’t overuse it (2-4 months tops).
